What is serotonin syndrome?
MedlinePlus describes serotonin syndrome as a potentially life-threatening reaction to certain medicines, in which the body has too much serotonin. It most often occurs when two or more medicines or drugs that affect serotonin levels are taken together. MedlinePlus's entry contains further detail that this page does not reproduce.
In its July 2011 Drug Safety Communication, the FDA discussed methylene blue in connection with the risk of serotonin syndrome when used with certain serotonergic psychiatric medications (see our FDA warning summary). The January 2024 ProvayBlue label, for an intravenous prescription product, includes a boxed warning concerning serotonin syndrome with concomitant serotonergic drugs and opioids. This summary concerns the cited label version and does not assess an individual product, exposure, or interaction.
